Now that we’ve had a couple of weeks to digest the first wave of what we now know to be AWOLNATION’s third full length album, Here Come The Runts, we thought we would give you a little recap of this past calendar month that reignited our passion, asked us for an opportunity to slow dance, and made us pack our AWOL travel bag many (hollow) moons in advance in preparation for those explosive headlining live shows that we all know and love!
The biggest news to cover is the announcement of a brand new album! First revealed to us on Twitter, we now know the name of AWOLNATION’s next endeavour to be Here Come The Runts, and we couldn’t be more excited.
From what we gather so far, it would seem Aaron has stripped back some of what he calls the “bells and whistles” of the older releases in favor of a more “organic” sound. “Bells and whistles” here meaning some of the more electronic elements we’ve come to identify AWOL’s sound by. According to some of those lucky enough to get a chance to listen to the album at a private listening event, the “bells and whistles” are still prominent throughout the album, but they aren’t stealing the limelight. To read an in depth analysis of some of the songs we haven’t had the pleasure of listening to yet, plus some insight from Aaron himself, check out this write-up from European rock journalists Teamrock.
An interesting note about the album cover photo is that it was taken by acclaimed rock photographer Henry Diltz. Diltz is the man behind the lens of the infamous album cover to The Doors' Morrison Hotel. Henry has also had the opportunity to photograph various legendary artists over the years including The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, and The Who! His legacy now continues into AWOLNATION’s new venture.
We’ve Received A Small Preview, But We Could Use Much More….
To bust the door wide open on this new adventure, AWOLNATION surprised us with a live video on Facebook building up to the introduction of Passion, the first single off of Here Come The Runts. This incredibly catchy three and a half minute burst of energy with an extremely explosive chorus was given to us accompanied by a lyric video with portrait shots of Aaron and a troupe of characters showing their passion:
A few weeks later, AWOL surprised us again with the release of an official music video for “Passion” highlighting Brazilian professional skater Og de Souza who lost the use of his legs at a very young age due to polio.
Once we find our passions, it’s almost as if they become a part of who we are. Although, just like many things, we sometimes become estranged to what we once thought were unbreakable bonds. With ‘Passion,’ AWOLNATION is here to remind us of what we love, but more importantly reinforce why we love it. Like Og, we can use our passion to overcome some of life’s biggest obstacles.
This insight into the new album was quickly followed by yet a third surprise to us all. Very casually on social media, AWOLNATION gave us another taste of what is to come by releasing yet another song!
The memorable opening of “Seven Sticks of Dynamite” gives the mental picture of Aaron nestled up in a cozy place strumming an acoustic guitar. Zach Irons extraordinary guitar tone becomes present during the chorus and remains throughout the entirety of the song adding a new and warmer element to an otherwise familiar sound.
The Vinyl Resurgence
One thing we are really excited to hear is the new album on freshly pressed vinyl! In recent years, copies of vinyl records along with different color variants have seen a massive resurgence in the music market and AWOL is about to cater to the masses. While the band has released vinyl editions of their previous albums, Aaron seems to be really focused on wax this time around. Photos of test pressings done by Memphis Record Pressing, a Tennessee based record pressing plant, of the UK version of Here Come The Runts were shared with us on AWOLNATION’s social media. Already available to pre-order in 3 different colors, Here Come The Runts should look mighty fine spinning around your turntable!
*The following information was just confirmed via AWOLNATION's Twitter. The band will travel to Vienna, Austria sometime in December to play a very intimate concert at Supersense, an all analog recording studio, during which they will play on all analog equipment! We hope to hear at least some of these recordings soon on a turntable near us, as Supersense has been known to release their private shows on vinyl! If you remember, this is almost like the Red Bull Sound Space episode AWOL did before the release of Run. Deezer is running a contest for fans from the UK, Germany and France to win tickets for this analog session. As more information on this comes to light, we will be sure to relay it to you!
See You At The Show!
As per usual, AWOL are set to tour in support of their new album! Thirty-eight dates have been lined up for this headlining tour and it is to begin immediately following the album's release in February 2018.
The Here Come The Runts Tour will also bring the band back to Europe for the first time since touring for Run in 2015, and will bring them to Ireland and Russia for the first time ever!
English alt-rock band Nothing But Thieves will be supporting AWOLNATION here in the states, but no word yet on if anyone will accompany the band in Europe.
We were also surprised to find out that the band will be playing Hangout Fest a little over a month after they get back from touring Europe. Look for the band to possibly be apart of more festival lineups as they are announced!
It’s shaping up to be an exciting 2018 for all things AWOLNATION! Remember to check in with us as we update you on anything and everything AWOL 2018!
AWOLNATION has started a Runts Family Album and will add to it as the Here Come The Runts adventure continues. This is pretty cool!
